CARITAS PROGRAMS

Get Involved

Caritas offers meaningful opportunities for both students and adults to engage in programs that support Fredericksburg Independent School District (FISD) students. Whether through mentorship, volunteer service, or community partnerships, everyone has a role to play in strengthening families and fostering student success. Together, we can build a network of care that uplifts our entire community.

Fredericksburg Elementary
Chess Club

Our Chess Club pairs elementary students with high school and adult volunteers who share their time and knowledge of the game. Through one-on-one play and guidance, younger students learn the fundamentals of chess while building problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This mentoring experience also fosters friendships and connections across grade levels. The chess club is offered through  Mr. Duncan's "We Belong" program. Chess Club is monthly for 5th grade students.

To get involved as a high school student or an adult in the Chess Club, call Niki Wienecke at 512-203-4331 or email her at nikicw.caritas.com.

Homework Club

Caritas Homework Club is offered at Fredericksburg Elementary School on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, September through April, 3:45 p.m. -  5:00 p.m. Tutors are available at no charge to offer academic support. The tutors assist students to complete homework, correct and review assignments, complete school projects, or work on curriculum directed by the homeroom teacher such as practicing sight words and reading.  Homework Club also welcomes guest speakers, who provide engaging and educational presentations, such as a hygiene talk with care packs or a visit from the SPCA to teach students about caring for pets.

If you would like to become a tutor for the program, contact Niki Wienecke at 512-203-4331 or nikicw.caritas@gmail.com.

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch is community adult mentors leading girls’ group mentoring during lunch. They currently meet once or twice a month at Fredericksburg High School and Fredericksburg Middle School. These volunteers are women from our community who are involved with different careers. Our focus during our time with the girls is to provide them with a comfortable place to eat lunch with conversations geared around setting goals, career pathways, budgeting and finance, friendships, etc. We hope to eventually expand and have a boys’ lunch bunch also. Students are usually invited to the group by teachers or peers.

If you are interested in volunteering or donating to this program, please reach out to Dawn Barron at 830-456-6589 or email her at admin@caritasfan.com.
